Do Antidepressants Really Work

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Depression can strike at any time. It’s Very common and it affects people of every color, race, economic status, or age. Depression is thought to be caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals, along with other factors and like any other medical condition it needs to be treated. The term antidepressant refers to a drug that helps to rectify specific biological abnormalities that give rise to the symptoms of depression. But what if that is not the case?
According to a study, which analyzed 47 clinical trials, at Hull university some of the best selling anti-depressants like Prozac, Seroxant, Serzone and Efexor are barely more effective than placebos in treating most people with severe depression.
“The difference in improvement between patients taking placebos and patients taking anti-depressants is not very great,” said Professor Irving Kirsch of Hull University, in northern England, who led the team.
“This means that depressed people can improve without chemical treatments.
“Given these results, there seems little reason to prescribe antidepressant medication to any but the most severely depressed patients unless alternative treatments have failed to provide a benefit.”
But drug companies strongly questioned their findings: “Their conclusions are at odds with what has been seen in actual clinical practice,” a spokesman said. “It is widely recognized by experts in the field that studies in depression are challenging and very difficult to conduct.”
This research, breaks new ground by incorporating data not previously released by drug companies.
Doctor Tim Kendall, deputy director of Britain’s Royal College of Psychiatrists research unit, said the study was “fantastically important.”
“I think it’s too dangerous to allow drug companies, where profit is a key factor, to be able to withhold data which shows that a drug is ineffective or harmful,” he said and added: “Three of these drugs are some of the most commonly used antidepressants. It’s not mandatory for drug companies to publish all this research. I think it should be.”
Alison Cobb, of British mental health charity Mind, hailed the findings as “a serious challenge to the predominance of drugs in treating depression.”
“Anti-depressants do help many people but by no means all and some people experience severe side-effects with them,” she said.
Another mental health charity, Sane, warned the findings “could remove what has been seen as a vital choice for thousands,” adding people should not stop taking their drugs immediately.

Funny Nudist Flight

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

< !-google_ad_section_start->After a lot of thinking I’ve decided to place these under Weird News category although it probably belongs to Funny News. You have to admit a plane full of naked people is kind of funny. Either way here’s Breaking News for today.< !-google_ad_section_end->

Travel agency OssiUrlaub.de is taking bookings for a trial nudist day trip from the eastern German town of Erfurt to the popular Baltic Sea resort of Usedom, planned for July 5.

The Price? Only 499 Euros or $735. “It’s expensive, I know,” managing director Enrico Hess told Reuters by phone. “It’s because the plane’s very small. There’s no real reason why a flight in which one flies naked should be more expensive than any other.”

“I wish I could say we thought of it ourselves but the idea came from a customer,” Hess said. “It’s an unusual gap in the market.”

The 55 passengers have to remain fully clothed until they board the plane, and dress before disembarking. The crew will of course remain clothed for safety reasons.

A funeral home was full of grieving relatives and friends gathered to bid Carrasco a final farewell. He was dressed in his fines suit lying in a coffin and he just woke up.

I couldn’t believe it. I thought I must be mistaken and I shut my eyes,” Carrasco’s nephew Pedro told the Ultimas Noticias newspaper.

Crazy Popcorn Suit pictureHave you ever thought that microwave popcorns can make you sick? Neither did Wayne Watson.

When Watson came to Denver’s National Jewish Medical and Research Center complaining about lung problems last September he went trough a series of tests and biopsies and in the end was put on inhalers and steroids.

After the doctors realized that none of the treatments were helping he was referred to pulmonary specialist Dr. Cecile Rose.

She took him trough a 90-minute interview, trying to figure out which one of his habits is making him ill. After realizing that his symptoms matched those of workers in popcorn factories she said, ‘I’ve gotta ask this question, it’s going to seem weird, but do you ever eat microwave, butter-flavored popcorn?”

Watson recalled. “It was like lights went off, marching bands started to play. I said, ‘How did you know to ask that? I am microwave popcorn. I eat two bags of it a day every day.”

He’d been eating that much, for at least a decade. He said, He noticed some funny changes while singing that he could not explain.

“Several years ago during choir rehearsals, whenever I’d do a solo, I would notice my lung capacity was diminishing, and I wasn’t able to sustain the notes like I used to be able to,” he said. “Slowly my lung capacity went from the high 80s down to about the low 50s.”

Hospital investigators found that factory workers were exposed to diacetyl levels between 0.75 and 4 parts per million. Tests in Watson’s kitchen showed crazy amount between 0.5 and 3 parts per million, according to the hospital.
