Westlake –An officer who tried to make a routine speeding stop on Interstate 90 early Saturday wound up having his cruiser stolen. According to a news release, events unfolded like this:
The officer — who was not named — tried to pull over a speeding car on I-90 at 1:23 a.m. near the Lorain County border. The driver, however, didn’t stop until he plowed into a ditch near Ohio 83.
The 33-year-old driver and his 15-year-old passenger then ran.
The officer chased and caught the teen. But while he was trying to put handcuffs on her, the driver — identified as Frankie Molina — circled back and drove off in the officer’s cruiser.
Molina didn’t go far. Avon police found the car abandoned, about four minutes later in a field at Ohio 83 and Main Street.
Meanwhile, at least five other law enforcement agencies joined in the hunt for Molina. Police found him near the abandoned cruise at 1:47 a.m. When they tried to arrest him, he resisted. By the time he Molina was taken into custody, he was bitten by a police dog and zapped with a police Taser weapon.
Molina initially told officers he was 17-years-old. But the teenager betrayed him, revealing that Molina was lying.
Molina was treated and released from Lakewood Hospital and is in Westlake City Jail. He faces a slew of charges.
The 15-year-old was released to her parents. She, too will face a half-dozens charges — including underage drinking — in Cuyahoga County juvenile court.
